RME Prioritizes Farm Safety in Youth

Together we can achieve—that philosophy is what drove a group of like-minded agricultural, corporate, and rural-based organizations to found Agriculture for Life (Ag for Life) back in 2011. Ag for Life is an Alberta-based non-profit that delivers educational programming designed to improve rural and farm safety, while building public understanding around the critical role agriculture plays in society.

Ag for Life aims to make safety a priority and help lower the annual number of farm injuries. The newest addition to their Rural and Farm Safety program is a brand-new Rural Safety Unit which debuted in April 2018.

“We wanted an innovative way to impactfully reach more communities with rural and farm safety programming, and that’s where the idea of a travelling classroom came to life,” said Luree Williamson, Ag for Life CEO.

The Rural Safety Unit comes with the support of the seven founding members including—Rocky Mountain Equipment, AdFarm, ATCO Group, Glacier FarmMedia, Nutrien Ltd., TransCanada Corporation and UFA Co-operative Limited.

This roving classroom has been well-received by youth and their families and is booking up quickly. “We’ve had 11 events since launching in April,” said Williamson. “By the end of August, we will have visited 19 events, reaching almost 85,000 people and we are already booking into 2019 and beyond.”

Inside the unit, visitors will discover exciting, interactive activities at stations covering a variety of topics including hazard identification, large animal safety, equipment, chemicals, and more.

“There are many different hazards present on the farm, so we want to bring the topic of safety to the forefront to help children identify and understand the hazards, and help create a culture of safety on the farm.”

Looking ahead, Ag for Life plans on incorporating additional technology into the Rural Safety Unit by including more videos, games and apps to engage youth.
